One of the most popular mountain bike rides is the Smuggler/Hunter Valley loop and the
vast network of trails in this area close to Aspen. The trailhead is only 5 minutes ride from
the town center and the loop itself can be completed in under 2 hours. Smuggler is the
gateway to Hunter Creek Valley, Four Corners, Van Horn Park, the Sunnyside Trail, Lenado.
It is possible to ride various trails with good variety as each one rarely follows the exact
same route. There are options here for the beginner to the experienced rider, with some
great single track on the decents.
Snowmass also has a great selection of bike rides, from the Ridge trail to the many
singletrack trails that cross the mountainside of Snowmass ski area. Trails here include
the Highline Trail, Tom Blake Trail, Powerline, Government East and West trails, then the
Ditch Trail back to the village. Remember to pick up one of the superb Snowmass Village
summer trail maps to guide you on the various routes.
The Roaring Fork River has its source at the Independence Lake (elevation 12,490 feet,
about 20 miles southeast of Aspen) near Independence Pass. This river formed the
beautiful Roaring Fork Valley in which Aspen is located and provides some great fly-fishing
for both the beginner and the experienced fisherman. Another river close to Aspen that offer
world class fishing is the Frying Pan. This river joins the Roaring Fork river at Basalt (20
mins from Aspen). These gold medal waters can be fished year round due to the warmer
water that is released from the reservoir. Fishing is by artificial flies or lures only. The area
just below the dam is catch and release, but this is where the bigger fish are, with trout up
to 16 inches long (6-8 pounders) being fairly common. Rainbow, rainbow-cutthroat, brook,
brown and pure cutthroat trout are all found in waters in the Aspen area. There are several
fly-fishing outfitters with guiding available. Please contact us for more information.
Enjoy hiking from late May until October. There is a great variety of trails for hiking and the
hike pastures offer the chance to see wild flowers in bloom as well as many species of
wildlife. For more detailed information on the individual hikes in the Aspen area click here.
