Activities - Hiking/Biking Safety info
IN CASE OF ACCIDENT OR IF YOU GET LOST
Backtrack on a maintained trail or proceed downhill until you come to a working emergency phone located in a
bright red box. Call 1111 or (970)479-4610 from a cell phone. Wait for someone to answer, do not hang up until
patrol has gathered all pertinent information.

CONSTRUCTION WARNING
Major improvements and repairs are made on Vail Mountain during the summer. Please be aware of
construction and maintenance, and obey all posted warnings and trail closures. You may encounter construction
vehicles on any mountain road. When using these routes, please obey all signage. Be very cautious and yield
the right-of-way.

REMINDER FROM SMOKEY
Because of fire danger, smoking is not permitted on the lifts and is discouraged on the mountain. Report fires
from any emergency telephone located in a bright red box. Follow instructions inside box.

ADEQUATE CLOTHING
Be aware, mountain weather changes quickly. There is usually at least a 10-degree temperature difference from
the bottom to the top of the lifts. Rugged footwear is advised for mountain activities. It is a good idea to carry a
windbreaker or sweatshirt, even on warm days.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDERSTORMS
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains. Storms are usually brief and need not interfere with
your activities. Seek shelter when you see a storm developing. Precautions include keeping off ridge-tops and
staying clear of chairlift houses and towers, power lines, open ski runs, lone trees and signposts. Lifts may
close on occasion, causing delays. Please take this into consideration when planning on-mountain activities.

HIGH ALTITUDE PRECAUTIONS
If you live at a lower elevation, take it easy at first. Altitude reduces the amount of oxygen available, and you will
tire more easily. Plan short trips until you are acclimated and drink plenty of water.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
Please follow the NORBA Code. Helmets and sturdy shoes with good tread are recommended at all times. Slick
soled shoes or sandals are not permitted on rental bikes. Bicycles with child carriers and tow behind bikes are
not permitted on lifts and are not recommended on the trails. All bikes must have two working hand brakes (no
pedal brakes). All loose clothing, bags or packs should be firmly secured so they do not interfere with the
bicycle's moving parts.

MULTI-USE
Be aware that trails and roads on Vail Mountain are used for many purposes during the summer; including
mountain biking, hiking, Thrill Sledding, and motor-vehicle travel. Mountain bikers should always yield the
right-of-way to other non-motorized trail users. Mountain bikers are restricted from hiking trails only. Should you
encounter hikers on any trail, please yield the right-of-way.

DRINKING WATER
When hiking or biking, always carry a water bottle. Aquafina water is available at Eagle's Nest during operating
hours.

SUN PROTECTION
At 10,000 ft (3,048 m), exposure to the sun is 40% greater than it is at sea level. We recommend sunscreen with
a sun protection factor of 15 or higher and eye protection.

ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION
Due to varied surfaces and steeper terrain, we recommend wheelchairs with off road capabilities. For more
information on accessible facilities and programs, please call Accessible Programs and Services at
(970)479-3072 (voice and TDD).

TRASH
Please keep our mountains clean and green. Put litter where it belongs or pack it out. Thank you for helping keep
the Vail Valley beautiful. Leave nothing behind but footprints, take nothing but pictures.
