Schumann's work is inspired by one of his favorite authors, E.T.A. Hoffmann. He composed the pieces to represent the duality of his personality – dreamer and passionate artist. The lush late Romanticism of Rachmaninoff’s Sonata has made this music appealing to audiences since its premiere.

This Silver Oak and Twomey Series opening night program links American composer Aaron Jay Kernis's String Quartet with that of Beethoven, exploring the relationship between two vastly different sounding works written in 1806 and 1997. Barber’s most recognizable work, known by millions as Adagio for Strings, receives a performance in its original string quartet version.
