Why Go Skiing in Mammoth Mountain – a ‘mammoth’ ski resort!

Why Go Skiing in Mammoth Mountain – a ‘mammoth’ ski resort!

There’s plenty of reasons to head to Mammoth Mountain for a holiday, not least the average of 400 inches of snowfall each winter – yes, that’s over 10 metres of snow every winter!

Mammoth Mountain is the highest resort in California – having been formed by volcanic eruptions around 50000 years ago - with a highest point of over 11,000ft (~3300m) and a vertical drop of 3100ft (944m).  On top of that it offers 300 days of sunshine ever year.

With a season that can run from early-November until June, Mammoth often features skiing on the 4th of July.  In 1995 it didn’t close until 13 August!

It was this ability to deliver long seasons that led Dave McCoy to found the resort in its location back in 1953.

The current resort offers top class fast chairlifts and gondolas and runs for all skill levels. The total skiable area is 3500 acres, with 150 runs.  About 25% of these runs are suitable for beginners, 40% for intermediates and 35% for advanced.

Experts have various backcountry and bowls to access.  There are also three terrain parks, which attracts some of the best athletes in the country, who come to use the super pipe (5.5m) and there’s even a ‘super-duper’ pipe (6.7m).
