WEDNESDAY, JULY 12
HENRY BUTLER
Once you’ve heard what bluesman Henry Butler’s hands can create on those ivories, there’s no going back. Master musician, pianist and vocalist Henry Butler will tell stories in this solo performance through the rise, swing, and rumble of his fingers as they channel sounds as diverse as his New Orleans birthplace: jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B, among others. Throw in a classically trained voice aching us through the blues, and you’re someplace you have never been before and would give anything to return to, again and again.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 19
FRANK VIGNOLA’S HOT CLUB OF FRANCE TRIBUTE BAND
Few jazz legends have a more exotic mystique than Django Reinhardt, the four fingered Belgian-born gypsy guitarist and banjo player who led the legendary Parisian ensemble known as the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in the 1930’s and 40’s. Out of their sizzling, infectious, and swinging style, the musical genre known as “gypsy jazz” was born. An international quintet led by virtuoso guitarist Frank Vignola will bring the smoking hot gypsy jazz style to life in this exhilarating performance.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 26
ELLA AND LOUIS TOGETHER AGAIN—FEATURING CARMEN BRADFORD AND BYRON STRIPLING
Join Vail Jazz as we celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday by re-creating one of the most iconic pairings in jazz history: Lady Ella and legendary trumpeter and vocalist, Louis Armstrong. With the passion and swagger of Satchmo himself, Byron Stripling’s phenomenal trumpet playing and vocals are complemented by Count Basie Big Band singer Carmen Bradford.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2
RENE MARIE + EXPERIMENT IN TRUTH
René Marie’s is the sort of voice which first comes to mind when someone asks for a jazz singer — big and expressive, at home in classic swinging settings and comfortable in crowds. There’s plenty to set her apart, though. She made her first recording in her early 40s, borrowing various elements of folk, R+B, and classical to create a captivating hybrid style.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9
PLEASE NOTE: This event is co-produced by Vail Jazz and the Vail Symposium, and will be a special event consisting of one 75 minute set at 6:30pm.

EXPLORING AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ

Spanning the 1700s to the modern era, the evolution of Afro-Cuban music has defined an isolated culture and influenced a global landscape. Professor Michael Davison, a celebrated educator and performer, will contextualize this musical tradition through an era-by-era analysis of Danzon, Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, and Salsa. Dr. Davison will be joined by internationally acclaimed Cuban ensemble ¡Cubanismo!, who will demonstrate the driving rhythms and diverse array of percussion instruments that bring each sub-genre to life. This event is co-produced by Vail Jazz and the Vail Symposium, and will be a special event consisting of one 75 minute set at 6:30pm.
