Where to Stay in Steep and Chic Beaver Creek

Where to Stay in Steep and Chic Beaver Creek, Colorado

Beaver Creek, just a short hop West of Vail along the I-70 highway to Denver, is Colorados most chic ski resort; indeed the resorts motto is Not Exactly Roughing It!  The lift network spreads across the mountains to Arrowhead, a cheaper slope-side hamlet, and to Bachelor Gulch with new condos and a Ritz-Carlton hotel. The resort has a charming European style village center with a modern pedestrianised area with heated pavements and upmarket shops. The resort really goes the extra mile with customer service and the mountain serves up fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies to skiers as they finish for the day.

All the slopes are below the treeline but, cookies aside, Beaver Creek offers more technical steeps than neighbouring Vail with double-black diamonds in the Talons area that come with truly gnarly 45 degree chutes and knee-destroying bumps; in particular Royal Elks Glade which is epic on a powder day which is pretty likely with an average snow record of 325 inches.

For the 14/15 season a new combi lift referred to as the chondola features six-person chairs and ten-person gondola cabins (5 chairs to every gondola) increasing the uplift from the resort by 35%.

So where to stay next season? Here are our top three pics:

The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa is a world-class 230-room, AAA Four Diamond resort that has just had a $4MM refurb which includes a new relaxation lounge, salon, boutique and Howard Head Sports Medicine Clinic at the Spa Anjali, along with improvements to the resorts pool deck. The fitness center now includes yoga, pilates, cycling and movement studios and coffee lovers will be happy to learn that a full-service Starbucks off of the Riverfront Gondola Plaza will be added before the winter season. Accommodation ranges from studio suites to three-bed condos featuring Westin Heavenly Beds. Amenities include a ski valet, fitness center and three infinity-edge hot tubs. The Westin offers direct access to the Riverfront Express gondola.

The Osprey at Beaver Creek is the number one rated hotel in Beaver Creek on TripAdvisor and offers slopeside accommodations; indeed it brands itself as the closest hotel to a chairlift in North America with a lift literally right outside the front door! The hotel competes with the Westin in the upgrade wars having undergone a $7MM renovation in 2010 which led to 45 guest rooms and two penthouse residences finished in a contemporary alpine design. Amenities include an outdoor heated pool with bar and hot tub, fitness center with steam room & sauna and a gourmet tapas bar.

The architecture of the Ritz-Carlton hotel resort is influenced by the great lodges of Americas National Parks yet comes with 180 rooms and 40 suites. The hotel is right on the slopes and has a huge Bachelor Gulch Spa and outdoor pool where you can reserve a cabana. The elegant art inspired rooms come with balconies that look out to either mountain or valley views. Amenities include fine dining at Spago by Wolfgang Puck and-crafted signature cocktails at the Bachelors Lounge.
