Park City and The Canyons merge to create largest ski resort in the US

Vail Resorts – owners of both Park City and the Canyons in Utah – have announced details of their plans to connect the two resorts, and so form the largest single ski area in the United States.

The largest ski area in the United States

The cost of the new infrastructure will be over $50 million and will take place next season. The new ski area will have more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain.

Even without the hyperbole, this is certainly one of the most ambitious developments in US ski industry history. The proposed work, which has to be approved by the local authorities, include all the following features listed below.

The Interconnect Gondola

This will be an 8-person, high-speed from the base of Park City to the Flatiron Lift at Canyons.

The gondola would have a mid-station at the top of Pine Cone Ridge to allow passengers to ski into Thaynes Canyons at Park City or to the Iron Mountain area at Canyons through new trails.

It will be the first gondola at Park City since the imaginatively-named "The Gondola" was decommissioned in 1983.

Changes at Park city

Upgrades of King Con & Motherlode lifts

King Con in Park City will be upgraded from a 4-man to 6-man, high-speed detachable chair, increasing skier capacity and reducing wait times.

The Motherlode lift – also in Park City - will become a four-person, high-speed detachable chairlift, also increasing lift capacity.

New Restaurant and upgrades to existing ones

A brand new restaurant will be built at the base of the Silverlode Lift, next to the new Interconnect Gondola. It will have seating for five hundred diners at a time.

The Summit House restaurant will be upgraded to improve the flow and increase seating. The Red Pine Restaurant at Canyons will also be renovated and 250 indoor seats added.

Snowmaking

Additional snowmaking will be created on two trails in the Iron Mountain area of Canyons – an area which will become increasingly important due to its location near to the Interconnect Gondola.

The plan also includes almost US$5 million of ‘catch up’ maintenance and upgrades at Park City, in addition to the regular $5 million budget.

Blaise Carrig, president at Vail Resorts said that these improvements will enhance the guest experience ‘by reducing crowding and lift lines, new and upgraded restaurants and more snowmaking’.

The Canyons to renamed as 'Canyons at Park City'

For the 2015-16 ski season, the company intends to operate the two resorts as one unified branded experience under the name ‘Park City Mountain Resort’ with The Canyons renamed to ‘Canyons at Park City’.
