The Epic Pass now includes skiing at Perisher, Australia

 

The recent purchase of Perisher ski resort in Australia by Vail Resorts means that it’s now possible to buy one lift pass that includes unlimited skiing in more than a dozen resorts, including Vail, Breckenridge and Park City.

New Gondola to Link Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley

Two of the top ski areas in California, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe have confirmed plans to link the two ski resorts into a world class sized region.

The plan involves a base-to-base gondola connection between the two mountains, passing over the KT-22 peak.

Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America with fifteen distinct alpine ski areas around split into the north and south shores and divided across two states. 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour

Following two stops in South America that set the pace for the 15th year of the big mountain freeskiing tour, the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour kicks off its North American stops beginning January 4-9 with the Canadian Freeskiing Championships in Revelstoke, BC; the US Extreme Freeskiing Championships in Crested Butte, CO on February 8-12; the North American Freeskiing Championships in Kirkwood, CA on February 22-27; and culminating with the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships in Snowbird, UT on March 14-19, 2012.

Olympic Snowboard Star Shaun White Partners With Vail Resorts

Shaun White, two-time Olympic gold medalist, has signed a deal to represent all six of Vail Resorts in Colorado and California. He will be based and train at Northstar-at-Tahoe in California and will design a signature 22-foot halfpipe there. The company will donate $5 for each Epic season pass sold to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, White's chosen charity. Epic passes range from $499 to $699.

Next Level Women’s Freeskiing Camp

Taught by a pair of big-mountain skiers, Ingrid Backstrom and Jessica Sobolowski-Quinn, who is also an Alaskan heli-ski guide, this clinic on Jan. 7 and 8 helps skilled women tackle Squaw’s notorious double-black-diamond runs. “We really focus on a whole mountain approach — how to read terrain, how to pick lines and execute them and how to ski a little faster,” Ms. Backstrom said. Toward the end of a previous camp, for example, all the women hiked to the top of Granite Chief, a peak at Squaw that rises above chairlift level, and skied the steep face.

Ski and snowboard volunteers sought for Forest Service tours

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking ski and snowboard volunteers to lead guided tours at Heavenly Mountain Resort one day a week for its “Ski with a Ranger” program.

Volunteers will be provided with a thorough orientation and a day pass for the day of each tour. The expected time commitment will be four to six hours a week, January through April, depending upon a volunteer's availability.

All volunteers are required to attend the program orientation Jan. 11.

The Volcom Stone Peanut Butter and Rail Jam Series at Sierra-at-Tahoe

The Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam series for amateur snowboarders returns for another 17-stop North American tour, and it will drop in on Sierra-at-Tahoe on Jan. 2. The PB&RJ series is cool in two ways: Theres no cost (other than lift ticket, of course) to enter the competition, which will be separated into four divisions -- 15 and under and 16 and over, girls and open -- and there will be a bunch of swag (i.e., free prizes and food.) so that everyone who enters walks away with something.
