Telluride - Raw Mountain Meets Sophisticated Resort

Telluride - Raw Mountain Meets Sophisticated Resort

Telluride is a renovated mining town situated in a picturesque valley in the southeastern corner of Colorado. Originally colonised by bohemians in the 1960s, Telluride developed as a ski area in the 1970s which has resulted in a high end winter playground with one of the most challenging mountains in the whole of North America. The resort has incredible views of the San Juan Mountains in all directions which gives it an expansive feel however it is fairly compact to get around.

The ski area, which receives over 300” of snow a year, divides itself between a steep, double black diamond front face which looms over the town, and more mellow terrain encompassing Mountain Village. Beginners have a great practice area below Mountain Village on the Meadows, whilst the three mile long See Forever is perfect for intermediates with great panoramic views. But it’s for experts that Telluride truly delivers where runs like Sprial Staircase test the most advanced skiers. The good thing about the expert slopes is that they are often half groomed and half left to bump meaning you’re more in control of the terrain.

Freeriders will want to head to the Gold Hill area which has pretty much everything a mountain can throw at you with cliffs, trees, chutes and powder. There’s even widely spaced tree runs too on the front face glades. Freestylers will want to head to the Surge Air Garden terrain park which has a wide variety of features including, non surprisingly, a large rail garden. There are also great natural features where the glades make natural playgrounds along with pipe-like gullies. But it’s the backcountry which attracts the purists who compare the above-treeline jagged slopes to the best in the Alps with open bowls that fall off the backside of the ski area. However due to how truly steep the slopes are here and the fluctuating temperatures, the snowpack is unstable enough to always warrant a local guide.
