There are many activities to do here in the mountains in the winter season. Here are some of
the activities available:
Downhill Skiing -
Snowboarding -
X - country skiing -
Snow-shoeing -
Dogsledding -
Snowmobiling -
Fly-Fishing -
This is the most popular form of skiing and is available from late November
until mid-April in all of the resorts we feature. Some resorts (Mammoth Mtn
and Lake Tahoe) often have skiing available until late May. Please consult
the individual resorts pages for more information and trail maps of the
skiing areas. We advise taking lessons if you are a beginner or intermediate
skier and our local in-resort hosts can advise you on ski school, rental
equipment, etc when you arrive in resort. Discounted ski passes and lift
tickets are also available from our in-resort host.
Snowboarding now appeals to a wide age group and all the major resorts
have developed a range of facilities for snowboarders, including terrain
parks, half-pipes and special areas reserved for snowboarding. There are
also many snowboarding events, including world cup competitions that take
place in the resorts. Please check the Calendar of Events for each resort for
more info on this.
Cross-country skiing is also available in all resorts, with most offering
several locations. Often the golf-courses are used for cross-country skiing in
the winter months. Normally there is a small charge that includes
equipment and access to the trails. Lessons are advisable for beginners.
This is a great sport for keeping fit and also seeing the spectacular scenery
in the Rocky Mountains.
Snow-shoeing is becoming ever more popular. This can often be combined
with a naturalist guide, so the experience is enhanced to combine fitness in
the oudoors and knowledge of the mountain winter environment and the
plants and animals found there.
Dogsledding (or 'Mushing') is available in most resorts during the winter
months and normally involves a half-day or full day tour of the surrounding
areas. Each sled can carry 1-2 passengers and the guide will usually offer
you the chance to take control of the sled and dogs if you want!
This popular pastime is available in most resorts and normally offered by
several companies. There are usually several tours available, ranging from
1-2 hrs to all day trips including lunch. Tours are normally guided and you
may ride the snowmobile alone or with a passenger. You can access some
beautiful areas of the back country and even experience fresh powder on a
snowmobile!
Most people wouldn't think of fishing in winter months, but the trout are still
active and feed year round. Normally winter fishing is limited to the
tailwaters, but the good news is that large trout are commonly caught in
these areas on nymphs or mysis shrimp flies.
